Bryan Morales, who spent seven years in the military as an infantryman and then an airborne medic, is one of three students in the medical school’s Class of 2020 chosen for the Brody Scholar award, according to a statement released Friday by ECU. The scholarship is valued at about $112,000. Morales, who earned a biology degree from Methodist University in 2012, will receive four years of medical school tuition, living expenses and the opportunity to design a summer enrichment program that can include travel abroad. The scholarship also will support his community service projects while he is in medical school. After serving in Iraq, Morales was honorably discharged from the Army. He also served in the Marines. In college, Morales researched a potential treatment for memory-related conditions associated with post-traumatic stress disorder. He also volunteered to help local veterans learn how to use their electronic health records to make more informed health care decisions.
